The South East Region has the largest membership of any of the BCSBAA regional
groups, and is one of the most active. It covers the area south of the Maroondah
Highway and east to the Victorian-NSW border and includes the Melbourne
metropolitan area, Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula. Any BCSBAA member
is welcome to join the region no matter where they live. Contact the Membership
Secretary on (03)5983 1397 to be placed on the SE Region members list.
The Region promotes the showing of black and coloured sheep at Dandenong,
Berwick, Warragul, Pakenham, Bunyip and Red Hill Agricultural Shows
and each year one of these shows is chosen as the Regional Feature Show, to
which special trophies and prizes are allocated.
The most common breeds of sheep run in the area are the British Longwool breeds
such as the English Leicester and Romney, and Australian breeds such as the
Corriedale and to some extent the Polwarth. These breeds are best able to
withstand the wet, cold conditions frequently experienced in the Region.
The Committee meets monthly between February and November. The
Regional Annual General Meeting and election of office bearers is held at the
beginning of April, and a guest speaker is usually invited to address the
members. The Committee currently includes students from Elisabeth
Murdoch College, Langwarrin, whose flock of coloured sheep are entered at most of the
regional shows with considerable success. The Region supports the school with
sponsorship and advice in the the running of its flock.
